SUCCESSFUL MANAGERS IN INTERNATIONAL JOINT-VENTURES IN CHINA
Among the developing countries, China is currently the one which attracts the most Western investments. These investments have been achieved principally by means of creation of sino-foreign joint-ventures. However, an international joint-venture is, above all, a "marriage of reason" which, due to its some inherent difficulties, often takes the form of a partnership that oscillates between competition and co-operation. Managing a joint-venture with Chinese is a still bigger challenge because of complexities of the Chinese environment. Western managers are therefore the key element for the successful integration of the international joint-venture in this country. Based on an analysis of sixteen case studies, we have, in this research, outlined the major professional and personal qualities required of Western managers to achieve success in China, and have also put forward some recommendations to Western companies for improving their joint-venture expatriates management.

Zhan SU is a professor of Strategic Management and International Business at Laval University, Canada. In 1982, he received his Bachelor’s in Eng. in China and in 1990, his Doctorate at the University of Pierre Mendes France in France. Since then, he has been an active researcher, being involved with numerous research and business projects and publishing a number of articles and professional papers in different business journals. He has lectured as a visiting professor in several French universities and Chinese universities. Zhan SU has also consulted for numerous organizations worldwide. His primary research interests are joint-venture strategy, internationalization process of small and medium sized high-tech firms, doing business in Asia and virtual company management.
