This chapter launches the discussion by raising the question What is cultural identity? It reminds us that cultural identity is not a one-sided phenomenon, but that the definition of the Self necessarily refers to the definition of the Other.

Thomas K. SCHIPPERS is an ethnologist and a lecturer at the University of Nice-Sophia Antipolis. He collaborates with the Institute of Mediterranean and Comparative Ethnology (IDEMEC) in Aix-en-Provence, France.
This book is the outcome of a collective reflection on immigration and interethnic relationships a multidisciplinary academic team.
