TSCF Rating For McGill University
The TSCF score sits at 71.
Universities can create a favorable environment for pedagogic performance, but the latter lies in a last resort on individual staff and students. In addition, performance evaluation in this sector is widely subjective, depending notably on the opinion of employers, the public image and fame of these organizations, and their involvement in partnerships with other actors.
To qualify for evaluation, a University must offer the whole range of the degrees (undergraduate - graduate - PhD). Higher education institutions that focus on a particular segment of science or on the application of science are taken into account only if: - they cover a sufficiently broad spectrum of disciplines and areas, - they practice fundamental research and teaching.
Our evaluation criteria include:
- Quality of education (student/faculty ratio, pedagogic methodology, logistics, income and budget) for 50%,
- Support to research (research budget, faculty involvement, patents, indexation and citation per faculty) for 25%,
- And organization development (HR policy, institutional income, international outlook including faculty, research and programs) for 25%. |

Mellieha Fireworks (Għaqda tan-Nar Marija Bambina Mellieħa) |

EE |
Mellieha Fireworks (Għaqda tan-Nar Marija Bambina Mellieħa) sustains that they are linked with the tradition of celebrating village feasts in Malta. In reality, the fireworks are 25-30 years old while the tradition is much older. This organization's activity has a negative impact over the environment, as it spreads solid debris in large quantities (plastics, cardboard and metals) over the land - and they do not clean up thereafter. Fireworks blown in the middle of urban areas and, as this organization's members would like, from the roof of churches, contain a real safety risk for the population and a risk of damaging the buildings. They also imply severe noise and light pollution. To minimize the risk of fire, members of this organization burn preventatively the vegetation, thus destroying precious endemic plants as well as animal nests and shelters. Finally, fireworks disseminate lastingly noxious chemicals in the environment - such as barium, aluminum and dioxin. The residues of the material used (notably cardboard and plastics) are purely and simply burnt in the open air. Moreover, members of this organization are often poorly educated men who develop a sectarian, "viril" in-group mentality around their hobby, as is often the case in hunting too. They do not hesitate to recourse to intimidation, bullying and physical violence against those who do not agree. Local authorities are corrupt or involved in a competition with other villages, and do not oppose this drift. - Similar remarks can apply to most other villages in the island. Municipalities continuously try to outsmart each other by who has the nicest, loudest and longest fireworks. The territory is very small, so fields and urban areas alike are heavily contaminated. The majority of the population is uneducated and unaware of the environmental and public health hazards involved, including respiratory diseases and cancer. Government does not interfere as it fears to lose voters in the coming elections. |
